4 CORNISH COASTERS IN SLATE

FOUR coasters made of a near black slate provide the perfect background for this design which was inspired by the ‘Cornish Shield’ which is the Arms of the Duke of Cornwall which are "Sable, fifteen bezants Or", that is, a black field bearing fifteen gold circles, representing coins.

One legend that explains the ‘Cornish Shield’ is the tale of the King's eldest son, captured by Saracens during the Crusades. Loyal Cornishmen, it is said, helped to raise the ransom of 15 golden coins, or bezants, named after Eastern Europe's Byzantium. The shield is thought to commemorate this Prince's ransom, with the legend 'one and all' noting a splendid joint effort by Cornishmen to save their Duke of Cornwall.
